Prime Minister’s address at the United Nations and urgent review meeting
Immediately after his address on the impacts of climate change at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review the current flood situation and rehabilitation efforts. The Prime Minister made it clear that he would not sit back until the people in the flood-affected areas are fully restored. He said that developing countries like Pakistan are constantly prone to natural disasters due to climate change, and the international community should cooperate better in this regard.

Directed immediate assessment of losses and close monitoring
The Prime Minister ordered Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal to closely monitor the relief and rehabilitation works and directed him to hold regular review meetings. He said that the assessment of the losses caused by the floods should be completed immediately so that the affected people could be provided with financial assistance and assistance in rehabilitation works as soon as possible. Especially, an early assessment of the damage caused to crops and infrastructure is necessary so that agricultural and economic activities can be resumed.
Orders to the National Highway Authority for immediate repairs
The flood disasters have also damaged the country’s vital infrastructure. The Prime Minister directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to expedite the work of restoring the section of the M-5 motorway affected by the Sutlej River. Especially, the crack formed on the motorway near Jalalpur Pirwala should be repaired immediately so that the communication system can be restored soon. The Secretary of Communications and the Chairman of NHA have also been directed to visit the affected area and assess the damage.
Emphasis on disease prevention and agricultural rehabilitation
The Prime Minister has ordered to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases in the flood-affected areas. In addition, he directed the formulation of special plans for the restoration of crops and promotion of proper agricultural activities in the flood-affected areas. This will not only benefit the farmers but will also strengthen the country’s economy.
Representatives of provinces and autonomous regions participate in the meeting
The meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, was attended by the Chief Secretaries of all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. In the meeting, the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) gave a detailed briefing on the current situation and rehabilitation plan of the flood-affected areas. The meeting was informed that about 350,000 affected people have returned to their homes from relief camps and tent settlements. In Sindh, too, with the floodwater receding, people living in the camps are ready to return soon.
Distribution of food and relief goods is underway
The meeting was also informed that distribution of food and other relief goods is underway in the affected areas to meet the immediate needs of the victims. The Punjab government was particularly appreciated for its excellent performance in rehabilitation and relief work, which has helped in providing immediate relief to the victims.
Rehabilitation of farmers and compensation for crop losses
Suggestions were also presented in the meeting regarding the damage caused to crops due to floods and the financial rehabilitation of farmers. The Prime Minister directed that a comprehensive report based on the assessment of losses be prepared within a week so that an effective and transparent relief program can be launched.
